There has been speculation that President Trump might try to fire special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating the President’s ties to the Kremlin. By firing Mueller, Trump would trigger a full-fledged Constitutional crisis by asserting that he is above the law. Congress has the constitutional authority and obligation to hold Trump accountable for this abuse of power. To protect Mueller from being fired without cause, two bipartisan bills have been introduced in the Senate—one by Senate Judiciary Committee members Thom Tillis (R-NC) and Chris Coons (D-DE) and another by Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Cory Booker (D-NJ). Both proposals seek to check the executive branch’s ability to fire a special counsel by putting the question to a three-judge panel from the federal courts. It is critical we ask our Senators to support one of these bills to prevent Trump from abusing his executive power.
