Uber has proposed a new minimum wage for drivers after years of protests, but it comes with a catch

Dozens of Uber and Lyft drivers staged a protest outside of Uber headquarters in support of California assembly bill 5 and to organize a union for rideshare drivers.

Uber has offered a $21 minimum wage for drivers as it fights against a California bill that could devastate its business.

But there’s a catch: the wage floor would only apply while drivers are on a ride. Studies show this to be only about 60% of drivers’ time.

You can now book an Uber ride without a phone for the first time


In Toronto, you can book a ride from kiosk’s inside the airport terminal. Uber rides are now bookable without a smartphone at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport. The company launched the kiosks earlier this month, with inspiration from similar ones at its driver hubs. There’s no word yet on future locations. Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more stories. For the first 10 years, Uber was more or less useless to those without a phone. But that’s finally starting to change.
